# Strategy for compiling data to support MEASO and the design of Benchmarking

Following the MEASO2018 conference in April, and the SOOS Scientific Steering Committee in May, we are developing a strategy for compiling information to support the first MEASO report, as well as for a concrete scoping of benchmarking activities in the coming years.

The table below is contained in a spreadsheet for researchers to fill in. At present, it is being filled in by a number of scientists to test the approach and to begin the development of summaries. If you wish to participate then please contact MEASO.

At present we just need to know what taxa have had surveys of abundance (relative densities) by your agency, which may contribute to regional assessments of status and trends in those taxa. The aim is to do this by memory rather than with precise numbers at this stage. We also are restricting the period of the surveys from 1980 to the present. A survey could be land-based, sea-based or remotely sensed. It can be an area around a station, a whole bay/sea, or a region of the Southern Ocean. It could be sightings, photography, nets, acoustics, CPR, underway etc. When returning summaries, we need to know who participated in filling it in so that we can keep a record of who has participated and which data they provided.

If you are willing to contribute data to this endeavour you will be invited to co-author any subsequent output.

The steps are:

1. Identify the ‘area or areas’ in which you have done surveys for abundance/density of taxa

Use the map below to identify the names of areas that are closest to where your work has been undertaken. These names are then used to identify the columns in the spreadsheet relevant to you.

The hatched areas in the map relate to the draft regional working groups of the Southern Ocean Observing System.

2. Identify the taxa for which you have done surveys

Each row represents a taxon for which abundance/density surveys may be undertaken. Of course, more than one taxon may be measured in a survey. Please consider them separately in this spreadsheet. Please use the closest taxon names within which your taxa would be represented.

3. Identify which decade or decades that you have done the surveys

In which decades were surveys undertaken? There is a column for each decade: 1980s (80), 1990s (90), 2000s (00), and 2010s (10). A cross will suffice if you do not have time to fill in a category for the number of surveys undertaken in each decade (next step)

4. Determine your ID code

This will be your country code plus a identifying number (carried on from previous contributors list at the end of the instructions ) i.e. if you are from Australia and 4 Australians have already completed the survey your code will be (AUS5). Please add this to the contributors table by country.

5. Determine how many surveys you did in each decade for the different taxa?

At this stage, we are not grouping taxa by survey. The aim is to identify how many times the taxa have been assessed for abundance. Please enter the category followed by your ID code for the number of surveys undertaken in the decades that had surveys Category 1 (ID) = 1 survey in the decade Category 5 (ID) = 2-5 surveys in the decade Category 10 (ID) = 6-10 surveys in the decade A blank cell will be assumed to have no surveys in that decade i.e. only fill cells in when there have been surveys.

The request is to indicate where (area of the Southern Ocean) and when (which decade) measures of abundance have been taken.

A cross in the appropriate column for the taxa estimated will be sufficient. However, it would be helpful if the number of years in each decade could be given in which sampling was done.

The coloured rows indicate where data can already be obtained (you can add decade/years in these rows if you wish)

Green = data can be obtained from the publicly available CCAMLR records

Yellow = data can be obtained from the published Adelie penguin censuses

Red = data can be obtained from the APIS survey results

Blue = data can be obtained from the IWC
